Our Saturday work day consisted of trail corridor attention (sides of the trail), as well as, trail tread (the path) improvement on the Elkin Creek MTB Trail (also allows for hikers). HELP US OUT IN SELECTING A THEME FOR A NEW MURAL ON THE FOREST BATHING TRAIL!

Ideas are “trickling” in, but we would love to have many more ideas for the mural to be painted at this site on the Forest Bathing Trail at Grassy Creek. We would like to have suggestions that are consistent with the atmosphere of this beautiful tranquil, meditative trail.

We have included a few pictures of completed murals that people liked. Other suggestions have been “Something serene, that looks like it belongs there, blends in, maybe a waterfall…”. “4 seasons in the forest. Spring flowers, summer mushrooms, fall colors, bare trees standing sentry in winter. With lots of little critters.”

What idea do you have for this iconic spot? It will surely be a big draw for visitors as well as local hikers. An observation deck is in the planning stage to provide for a great view of the mural and the lake. The deck would make a wonderful Eagle Scout project. Our thanks to Derrill and Lori Rice, property owners, for this mural opportunity. Please feel free to share!

We had a great workday this morning roughing in a short spur trail off the "forest Bathing" trail. It will provide access to a viewing platform highlighting a future mural on the dam!

We would love your comments below on possible themes for the mural consistent with the Forest Bathing atmosphere.

Once we finalize on a theme, we will interview artists and start fundraising for the project.

What a great MST Birthday Hike! We put ourselves in the Thru and Section Hiker mentality and embraced the weather! Rain came - Our Spirits soared - Friendship developed - Trail Magic happened - And we toasted to another Strong 45 years! HAPPY BIRTHDAY - (unexpected Birthday Cake from Mary was our Trail Magic Moment). Hike Leader: Mike "The Rock of Ages" with his side kick Trail Ninja Jason- with guests Rick "Hawkeyes", Carol, Justin... Mary "Angel" and Alonda caught up on the return hike - with the MST Birthday Cake providing nourishment! We missed Celeste - who was out on the Forest Bathing Trail... we were all hiking! Dr. Bill Griffin taught LEVTA (Ladies of Elkin Val

Dr. Bill Griffin taught LEVTA (Ladies of Elkin Valley Trails Association) about how to become naturalists when we are out on the trails, learning how to take time to examine the plants, “frondle” the ferns, looking at leaf size and placement on the stem, looking at how many petals are on a flower, listening to how many different birds we hear and thinking about their sounds, and not just relying on our apps to identify plants and birds.

We saw 6 different species of ferns and heard 24 different species of birds. It was a great learning hike and we hope you will be able to join us in August when even more wildflowers will be in bloom. We had such a good time we didn’t even mind the heat! Like with ”forest bathing” on a trail, we were using all of our senses to enjoy and identify the beauty of nature which abounds all around us.

There are many ways to experience the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. You can enjoy day hikes, section hikes, thru hikes, or you can do like Brandon and run the MST. It’s always great meeting hikers and runners in segment 6. We wish Brandon the best of luck as he continues on his path to finishing the MST.

Spots are still available for the three guided hikes of the Forest Bathing Trail for NC Trail Days. Here is a summary of the three hikes:

Saturday, June 4, 8 AM - Bill Griffin will lead a naturalist walk on the Forest Bathing Trail. This will be a slow walk as the hikers observe flora and fauna along the way. This is a kid friendly hike. Bring water, insect repellant, and consider bringing field guides, binoculars, magnifying glass, a sketch pad, and your camera.

Friday, June 3, 11 AM and Saturday, June 4, 11 AM - Celeste Queen (Fri) and Betsy Small (Sat) will lead normal hikes on the Forest Bathing Trail. The Tasting Room at Grassy Creek Vineyard (the trailhead for this hike) will open at noon on both days.
