ELKIN CREEK MTN Bike Course- Iron Falls, Possum Shot, and Elkin Creek is OPEN. THANKS TO ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS, SOME PICTURED AND SOME NOT SHOWN, that have helped to reopen all of the Elkin Valley trails after SEVERAL STORMS. *Remember to be aware of your surroundings, a tree or other obstacle can be on trail at any time. Those hiking these trails, remember to follow the posted rules and walk the opposite direction of the bikers. Bikers have the right away, specifically on the MTN BIKE Course. ELKIN CREEK TRAIL: OPEN
We've had multiple work days on the Elkin Creek MTN Bike Course and hiking trails.
We need to look at a couple of other spots on Possum Shot and Iron Falls- we should be at 99% Clear until then. Note that there will be root ball holes and other obstacles- so be ready to make adjustments if you're riding your bike. Bobby, Tony, and Rob worked last Friday and Saturday, too. So we've really had at least 5 WORK EVENTS within the MTN BIKE COURSE. Thanks to Mike, Bill, Tony, Bobby, Rob, Kevin, Jason, Alan, Kevin, Mark, Joe, and Jason on these last 3. There are other trees down within our trail system - from multiple storms/different times over the past 3 weeks! #yearofthetrail - has also felt like Year of the Trees or Storms. Keep up the community activism, volunteerism - this is why Elkin is the Great Town, along with being a #trailtown - #elkinnc #trailmoments Thanks to those who are reporting trail issues, we appreciate the reports via our website, elkinvalleytrails.org & direct reports. #trailinspectors

HELP US OUT IN SELECTING A THEME FOR A NEW MURAL ON THE FOREST BATHING TRAIL!

Ideas are “trickling” in, but we would love to have many more ideas for the mural to be painted at this site on the Forest Bathing Trail at Grassy Creek. We would like to have suggestions that are consistent with the atmosphere of this beautiful tranquil, meditative trail.

We have included a few pictures of completed murals that people liked. Other suggestions have been “Something serene, that looks like it belongs there, blends in, maybe a waterfall…”. “4 seasons in the forest. Spring flowers, summer mushrooms, fall colors, bare trees standing sentry in winter. With lots of little critters.”

What idea do you have for this iconic spot? It will surely be a big draw for visitors as well as local hikers. An observation deck is in the planning stage to provide for a great view of the mural and the lake. The deck would make a wonderful Eagle Scout project. Our thanks to Derrill and Lori Rice, property owners, for this mural opportunity. Please feel free to share!
